I Remember

In my endeavor to write more frequently, I’ve decided to include all of my writing (i.e., my creative stuff). So here’s a poem I wrote today for Intro to Creative Writing. The prompt was to write an I Remember poem modeled after the piece of the same name by Joe Brainard.

***

I remember walking into the sea.

I remember falling into the water, my saltwater of joy blending with her saltwater of indifference.

I remember moving my arms.

I remember kicking my legs.

I remember breathing deep.

I remember gliding.

I remember floating.

I remember sighing.

I remember listening deep as she whispered to me.

I remember greeting her, them?

I remember Thetis and Yemaya.

I remember him too, or them?

I remember their greetings; Poseidon and Make Make.

I remember the singing.

I remember the song.

I remember my voice, softly singing along.

I remember the sunlight slowly drifting away.

I remember grace and beauty.

I remember colors in the dark.

I remember a kiss upon my brow.

I remember waking up.

I remember the shore.

I remember the seashell imprinting on my palm; they tell me I refused to let it go.

I remember my mother smiling, and kissing where they had kissed.

I remember dancing on the sand.

I remember longing for the sea.

I remember their voices, always whispering to me.

I remember dreaming.

I remember eating.

I remember longing.

I remember pleading.

I remember counting the days until graduation.

I remember the pride.

I remember feeling victorious.

I remember diving.

I remember smiling.
